Because I thought it might be interesting to see where everyone's coming from ...

Here's a thread to say hi, and say a bit about your interest in movement/embodiment/whatchamacallit.

What movement things do you do -- or not do? Or: what did you do in the past? Or: what might you be interested in learning more about, but haven't tried yet? Or: what do you love reading about even though you'd never want to do it personally?

I suggest that people feel free to jump all over each other and ask questions if you're curious about something someone else mentions (if you'd rather not answer questions, please just say so), or want to say "me too" or compare notes.

Random white girl freestyle pop music dancing, although in the distant past I took some belly dance lessons and even longer ago was subjected (as part of gym class) to the Virginia Reel, some square dancing, and a jazz dance class.

That's an interestingly wide variety of styles. :-)

I went to some really good public schools in the late 60s and through the 70s. Among other gym classes, I took rifle shooting (there was--still is--a range under the auditorium stage), rope climbing, meditation, and tennis.

This is a great descriptor.

I used to go dancing a lot, and to "African" dance classes (mostly a mix of South African and West African styles).

People would say stuff like dancing isn't real exercise, but I think they meant the drunk shuffle form of dancing (which is still exercise, but just lighter). I used to stay on the dance floor for 2-6 hours and mostly drink water to stay hydrated, which was definitely more cardio than a one hour session at the gym.

These days I don't go out much for variety of reasons, but I do love to dance when I get the opportunity, and occasionally put on some music and bop around the house (often while doing housework).

I've been meaning forever to attend the local No Lights, No Lycra but I'm not even sure it's still going.

I think dancing is very good exercise. I'd prefer to actually go somewhere and dance, but that's not an option where I live, so I have an exercise dance tape which is fun. Youtube has some good free dance videos that I've used before as well.

Yay dancing! I went to a No Lights, No Lycra once and it was so much fun - very freeing, and it made me hear details in songs that I'd never noticed before.
